iPod touch Sending Text Messages

is there a way to send text messages with an iPod touch? Our granddaughter has a touch (not the latest generation) and has friends who can. If there’s a good app let me know.

I think she wants to use a Facebook Messenger app for kids that her friends have.

She should be able to send texts using the Message app on her iPod Touch. The only requirement is that she will have to be connected via WiFi since a Touch does not have cellular capability.
