sharing a scanner over a network

if i understand correctly, it seems like sharing a scanner over a network disappeared sometime before el capitan. so, given that, how are people sharing their scanners right now?

i have a canon multi purpose USB scanner + printer.

* are people sharing using USB sharing? how does that interplay with having a shared printer connected? what software are you using?
* has anybody tried using SANE to share it over the network (and then use twain-sane or something on the receiving end?)
* has anybody tried sharing from a windows machine and accessing the scanner and printer from OS X? does that work? which version of windows?
* has anybody just given up, and run an old version of OS X on the machine that you are sharing from? if so, which version?

sure, but that doesn't seem to apply to El Capitan. El Capitan doesn't seem to be able to share a scanner over the network anymore.

I would like to be able to share a single USB scanner to a bunch of macs running El Capitan, and I'm trying to figure out how to do it.
