iCloud Sharing iCloud Drive folder with Windows users via iCloud.com

I already use iCloud Drive collaborative folder sharing with another Mac user, but didn’t realise there was an option to do this via iCloud.com with non Mac users, if I understand these links correctly:-

I have two folders of family documents that I share with my sisters using Dropbox (because three of them are Windows only). I would like to stop using Dropbox for this.

Does anyone do this? Any problems? Is the shared folder password protected?
