I like this feature of connecting macbook to any computer and providing wireless internet. Altho I hate that closing the lid causes it to cut off.

Anyway to get the macbook to go to sleep but still keep the connection alive?

Plug in a keyboard, mouse, and external monitor (Or just put the dongle in I believe it will treat that as a "monitor").

There is no way to sleep a computer and keep providing internet sharing.

It is possible to close the lid but not go to sleep, an application like InsomniaX does exactly this. This way, you don't have to lug around a keyboard/mouse/monitor.
