When I ran Windows, I used to use SoundForge
to do all my audio editing and file conversion,
but now I'm using a macbook pro. I don't have
much money to spend on this kind of software.

What are good audio editors for intel Mac?

I'm kind of looking for shareware or freeware
at this point. It needs to have the ability to
record from the mic line or internal mic and
it needs to be SMALL (no garageband!).

Something similar to Audacity would be nice.
I've tried Audacity and I don't like it. I used
to have Cacaphony on my G4 imac. Simple,
easy, and it worked great. Any suggestions
on what to get? It NEEDS to be universal.

So the problem with Garageband is size and bulk, which I understand. Can you say more about what is wrong with Audacity, so we know what to help you look for?

This app is very simple and used to be bundled with consumer macs...

It doesn't come with Intel macs, does it? It doesn't sound like it's UB yet, either. :(

SoundStudio seems like it might do just what I'm looking
for, but I'm not gonna pay $80 for it if it isn't Universal
Binary yet. Audacity launched really slow and it crashed
once out of the three or four times I tried to use it. Also,
i couldn't figure out how to change the recording input
in the program right away.

Is there a universal binary for Audacity out already?
There wasn't when I downloaded it, but that was a while
ago now. Maybe it would run better and I would actually
use it and get to know it.

Audacity is a processor-hog on my Macbook Pro and it
probaby will be as long as it isn't a univeral binary.

I need something LITE because I'm running it at the same
time as iTunes and Reason 3.0 (which isn't universal yet).

Sound Studio 3 IS a universal binary. A UB does not yet exist for Audacity. Download the SS3 trial (very generous trial period) and play with it to see if it'll suit your needs.

If your going to pay in the end, go for Logic Express.

Or go out and buy a soundcard which has Pro Tools M-Powered or Cubase LE bundled with it. You'll need one if you want to record an external mic.

Ooooh, thanks for the clarification...they should really make this clear on this web page. That's a strong selling point. :)

I actually really like this app. I hope that Apple is still bundling this with consumer Intel Macs. :)

Nope, it isn't bundled in with the Intel Macs. I have an Intel iMac (first Mac) and have been playing around with Sound Studio. My needs are very simple - tracking, resampling, dithering, simple fades and that's it. I'm a "taper," live concert recording archivist. I don't do much post-processing on my recordings and plan to keep it that way. What you heard at the show is what you get!

The best little two track record app I have found for Mac is Spark ME (free but hard to find now). Development has stopped, and it's not available anymore. But this thing will record with my firewire 410 at any insane sample/bit rates I want. Has a meter of recording time and recording time avail on your hard drive while recording, as well as input levels. It's great.
Search hard and you can probably find it somewhere. No intel version though, sorry.

And Audacity is buggy as hell on the Mac. Solid as a rock in Linux and Windows. I love audacity, though it's just not stable to record and doesn't work with my firewire I/O devices.

I tried installing Cubase from a Presonus Firebox package,
and it couldn't install. I got some error message that
sounded like it just wouldn't work on the Intel. These
companies need to seriously get moving and get an easy
simple intel sound recording and editing program out.
