I never played the original. Maybe it will be just as impressive with a remake?
I wager it will be better than the original in a few ways, mostly regarding the UI, which was an even more convoluted mess than it was in SS2. The first game needed a mod in order to enable mouse look. SHODAN's VA is reprising her role in the remake, and Warren Spector of Deus Ex fame is on board, so it should be at least decent if nothing else.
Only thing I'm not crazy about at the moment is that they're developing the game in the Unity engine, so it's probably not going to run as well it otherwise could. On the other hand, when dealing with a limited budget/crowd funded affair, you have to stretch every dollar as far as you can.
Call me cautiously optimistic at the moment. Hopefully if this is a reasonable critical and commercial success, they will give similar treatment to System Shock 2.
