Went in to apple store last night to do a claim due to edges chipping off and way too much wear and tear for the amount of time I’ve had it. They wouldn’t do anything because the manager said the only way AppleCare + covers it is if it is bought the same day as iPad in same transaction and I bought the magic keyboard a few days before.

I am so confused on what the real rules are on this thing. Any chance apple support will do something?

In the middle of several books.
The Apple employee you spoke to is wrong. It doesn't have to be bought at the same time of purchase. The cut off is 60 days.

From the link: "Service coverage is available only for iPad, its original included accessories, one compatible Apple Pencil, and one compatible Apple‑branded iPad keyboard used with your iPad for protection against (i) defects in materials or workmanship,"

That’s very different than the Applecare+ policy itself (which doesn’t say it has to be on the same receipt), and other stories from users here and elsewhere. What we’ve heard others say is that as long as your iPad’s Applecare+ is active, your Apple-branded keyboard and other Apple-branded accessories (like the Pencil) are covered under that policy.

I would call or chat with Apple Support, be very polite, calm and respectful, but persistent, and ask it to be escalated to tier 2 if they refuse. You may want to mention there is no mention that the Apple-branded keyboard (i.e., in your case the MK) needing to be on the same receipt in the iPad’s latest (and previous versions) Applecare+ policy. You can review this yourself too:

Actually I’m not sure there’s a 60-day cutoff for purchase of Apple-branded accessories intended to be used with the iPad. There is a 60-day window to purchase AC+ for the iPad. But I’ve read stories (and I don’t have links, although there might be one if the Verge or 9to5 links above) where users have purchased an accessory a year later for the iPad and it’s still covered because the AC+ was still active.

Edited to add: take a look at this post:
Post in thread 'Does new AppleCare contract cover existing Magic Keyboard?'

I believe the cut off is 60 days due to that being the time frame to purchase AC+. If others have gotten coverage 6 months or a year later, I would consider that a gift. You could be right, though. The wording is very vague in that regard.

I agree. It reminds me of all the confusion we saw about the one-year versus 60 days to buy AC+ for Macs. It was, it wasn’t, it was, it wasn’t ….

I decided to be a guinea pig for this process and try to add my new Smart Keyboard Folio to my new iPad’s AC+ via Apple support chat.

First I went to checkcoverage.apple.com and entered the S/N of the keyboard and the purchase date. A message was displayed that said the purchase date couldn’t be validated and to contact Support. It’s no surprise it couldn’t be validated because I bought it from Best Buy. I’ll guess that it can validated online using this method if you bought it from Apple.

I chatted with Support and the outcome was that I need to call the Applecare Agreement Team tomorrow. That team can be reached by calling the general US Support number (800-275-2273). During the chat I uploaded a photo of the keyboard receipt, but the tech couldn’t validate the purchase date; it has to be done by the Agreement Team. No problem. The tech gave me a case number to reference.

So I’ll pick this up again tomorrow and we’ll see what happens. I anticipate they will tell me either (1) I don’t need to add for it to be covered, or (2) your purchase date is validated and you’re all set. While I’m on the phone with them, I will ask a couple of specific timeframe questions related to this thread.

@Jacoblee23, you may want to consider calling the Applecare Agreement Team too. They’re the experts. I’ve talked with them before and they’re a friendly, knowledgeable team.

I went through this already. Went through apple support and was told it had to be purchased on the same day as the iPad. I bought my iPad from costco during the preorder and then bought the apple keyboard from Apple once I had the new iPad. I asked to speak to a manager and no dice. Day #2, went through apple support again and asked to speak with an apple care specialist and I explained the situation. The person I was texting with said he’d schedule a call for me so they can reach out because he couldn’t help since he was merely IT support. No call received from them. Texted the same guy and he put it in again and asked what time I would like to be called. This time, they called and I explained the situation to them. The lady was really nice and understanding. She put it in without a problem. All she asked for was the serial number of the magic keyboard. I did look up the coverage for the magic keyboard and I can see it’s covered by apple care+. Keep trying and good luck.

Exactly, calling the Applecare Agreement Team directly is what will work, not general Support. The Agreement Team can be reached by calling the general Support number (in the US it’s 800-275-2273) and asked to be transferred to the Applecare Agreement Team.

Just had a call with the AppleCare+ team and was able to add Keyboard and Apple Pencil. The Pencil was bought a couple of months after purchasing the iPad. The Magic Keyboard around the time the iPad was purchased. Except the Pencil, everything else was bought at Amazon. No issues getting them registered with the plan that is running for the iPad Pro.

My follow up:

I was able to add my Smart Keyboard Folio to my iPad Applecare+ plan. I also asked the AC Admin Dept advisor a few other questions and told him I wanted to pass on this info to the Macrumors community. He said that was great to help clear up confusion about iPad accessory coverage.

The Applecare Administration Department can be only be reached by calling the main Support number (in the US 800-275-2273), and ask to be transferred to the AC Admin Dept. At first you may get a plan advisor, but this person is still general tech support and not the AC Admin Dept. The plan advisor can help customers buy an AC policy, but cannot add accesories to the plan. For that you need the AC Admin Dept, so be firm and ask to be transferred.

The AC Admin advisor said it’s good to always add either your keyboard or pencil to the policy, but interestingly, you can’t add both. (Update: please see @JuanitoIvanisios post below about this). He said even if you have both, they are covered, but they have an exception policy if you need a repair for the accessory not added to the policy.

He strongly encourages anyone with an Applecare question for any product to contact the AC Admin Dept. General tech support and retail does not receive the in-depth Applecare training that the advisors in the AC Admin Dept get.

To add an iPad accessory, you will need:
  1. Serial number of the accessory (found on the box)
  2. Applecare Agreement number OR
  3. iPad serial number
Note: the purchase date was not requested.

Here’s some other questions I asked him with his answers:

Is it required to add the iPad keyboard or pencil to the AC+ policy for it to be covered?

He said it’s a really good idea to get it added and will help if you need a repair. He didn’t say it was required but he strongly recommended it. They do not have to be on the same receipt or purchased from the same company.

After buying an iPad and AC, how long after does a customer have to buy an Apple iPad keyboard or Pencil for them to be covered under that policy?

There is no timeframe to add an Apple iPad keyboard or pencil to your existing iPad AC+ policy as long as your policy is active. The 60-day timeframe only applies to buying the AC+ policy for your iPad.

If a customer buys an Apple iPad keyboard and/or Pencil and then buys an iPad and AC+, are the keyboard and pencil covered?

Yes, they’re covered. It’s ok to buy the accessories before you buy the iPad and AC+. Remember to add one of them to your policy.

Can customers add their own keyboard and pencil via checkcoverage.apple.com if purchased from Apple (so that the purchase date can be verified)?

The accessories don’t have to be purchased from Apple. If the purchase date can be verified on that site, this will work, but sometimes the date can’t be verified. In that case, call Apple Support and ask to be transferred to the Applecare Administration Department.

How long before I‘ll see my iPad accessory on mysupport.apple.com?

It generally takes about 72 hours for it to show up.

I hope this is helpful clearing up some of the misunderstandings about iPad accessory coverage under Applecare+.

That covers what I experienced as well, just written up in a great way! Thanks! There was one difference though and that was about the Pencil. The admin said that both the Pencil and Keyboard can be added, but only one will show up as registered when looking up the coverage externally. In their system both items will show coverage from what he said. I could choose which one that would be and I obviously went for the Keyboard. He then said that he will send an email to me confirming the coverage of the Pencil as the second item added to the policy. This email I have received while we were on the call. So both items should be covered under the plan for the iPad Pro.

Oh that actually makes more sense about which accessory will show externally. Thanks for clarifying that. I’ve updated my post based on yours.

Thank you. Unfortunately I can't find the box and I cannot read the serial number on the felt. Trying to find a way to make it more legible. It is black text on gray felt and very hard to read. Apple won't do anything until I figure out what the serial number is.

My trick for difficult to read serial numbers is to take a photo of it and then enlarge it and modify it so that it’s readable. I had to do that to get the SKF S/N off the box; it’s in a what looks like 1 pt font size. Maybe that would help? Also some receipts include the serial number depending where you bought it.

Oh that’s cool for the MK. Funny that the SKF’s S/N isn’t available there.
I don’t have one of those. I missed that you had the smart folio. Is there no similar info section for that?

Thank you for letting me know you can find it this way. This is a disaster. Everyone you talk to gives you a different story and most people have no idea what they’re talking about. I had to wait nearly two hours to be transferred to a senior advisor both times I talked to them. The first one was gonna do it as long as I found the serial numbers. The second senior advisor said their system would not allow them to do it because the magic keyboard was not purchased within 30 days of the IPad Pro. I guess I am just going to give up. I am tired of this mess lol.

I can understand you want to give up, but I have to ask: are you sure you were talking to an advisor in the Applecare Admin Department? It sounds like you were transferred to a senior advisor in general tech support based on “their system won’t allow them to do it …” General tech support, even a senior advisor, doesn’t have this functionality in their level of software.

The AC Admin Dept’s system has this ability and isn’t based on the purchase date. When getting transferred to another advisor, it can help to ask “are you in the AC Admin Dept?” just to be sure you’re in the right place.
