Some fun with the Nikon 10.5 fisheye and Nikon Capture

Nice! So Capture straightens out the image? I'm going to have to look at this. As Gary mentioned, I use the 10.5 fisheye. It's my primary lens. I love the way I can get right up on top of a subject. But not too close - or else you start getting some serious bending of objects. Usually I have lot's of space on either side of my subject (normally a house), so if Capture can straighten that stuff out, I may have to add it to my workflow. Here's one I shot yesterday. Nice bent palm tree eh?

Forgive the mess, the kitchen is in the process of being redone and there's a drop clothe on the pool table... plus crap every where. The fridge has been moved into the pool room cuz we're resurfacing the hardwood.
By the way, the only way I was able to justify buying this lens, is that I've been hired by FDOT to map all of the Florida Keys. I'll be down for almost two weeks, jumping island to tiny island. While there I hope to be shooting a ton of panos. One spectacular view after another.

Yes, Capture can straighten out the fisheye effect with just a click the mouse. There are two modes. One maintains the aspect ration of the format. The other a panoramic view.
The differences are seen from the first post in this thread of some shots at the Udvar-Hazy Center of the Air & Space Museum near Dulles Airport.

Nikon does not yet offer a full frame digital. So the 10.5 is a digital specific fisheye lens, designed for the 1.5x field of view factor.

In any event, the images are a real treat. It would be a lot of fun to play with that kind of distorted perception.

I am torn between the Sigma 8mm Circular fisheye and the 15mm Canon fisheye. I'd like to use the lens for other things besides QTVR stuff, and I'm thinking that would be hard with the Sigma.

I just want to thank you all for using a fish-eye for something other than skateboarding photos. Everyday in TV Production class in high school kids watched skate videos rather than learning Final Cut, and I guess no one had any other lenses.

How much more can a fisheye lense capture? Can someone kindly take a photo of something using one lense (say the kit lens, or even a telephoto lens of some sort) and then take a photo of the same subject/area using the fisheye so that we can see how much more this Nikon 10.5 fisheye captures?

I found some Photoshop Actions/Plug-In's over on www.kekus.com that work good if you don't have Nikon Capture. Here are some examples of what I did with the Remap Action. First is the distorted picture then it's cropped and also expanded to a wide angle. Works pretty well

BTW, the Smith's "Paul E Garber Aircraft Restoration Facility" in Maryland is worth a visit for any propeller head - - just be aware that tours are limited and reservations are mandatory ... and that viewing the facility can be both depressing and fascinating at the same time (a lot of stuff is in really bad shape). Because some hangers are completely off-limits to visitors, they only let you peek in the doors, so I'd bring a fast telephoto in addition to a WA.
