iPhone Speechify App breaking rules to offer "discount" outside App Store

Yesterday my in-app purchase free trial of Speechify expired. Today I opened the app and was greeted with this message:

Resubscribe to Speechify today and save 40% on a one-year Premium subscription.

Discount offer is only valid for subscriptions purchased through the speechify.com website.


Discount not valid for purchases made through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Sure enough, clicking the Resubscribe now button took me out of the Speechify app and to the Speechify website with an offer to resubscribe.

I thought Apple wasn’t allowing apps to do things like this?

Also, to add more strangeness, the offer on the website was for $200/yr, much more than the $159.99 I would have paid if I hadn’t canceled my free trial. And $60 more than Speechify’s own pricing page shows.
