Ssd flash card failed

my 5 yo MacBook Pro retina just failed me. It appears Apple ran a diagnostic and the 500gb ssd card needs to be replaced. I’m am not paying for the ridiculous money Apple is asking. 1000$
I’m trying to find a easy fix as I know the part is not welded so swapable with a new one.
Question: Best quality/price and can I put a 256 in it?
