Customer brought me a MacBook Pro A1286 (2011 model I think) that doesn't produce any sound, except for the startup chime. No devices show up in sound preferences, even after doing an upgrade install.

Did you plug in headphones to see if sound was present there? That particular model has a bad habit of a sticking switch in the headphone jack. The machine then thinks that headphones are plugged in and therefore no sound to the speakers.

Chime works because that's pre-boot.

You can try to fix the headphone jack by plugging a pair of headphones in and out several times to see if you can unstick the switch. Sometimes that works.
