Hi All,

I'm really new to video - I've started recording my 14yo son's Rugby Games with my iPhone and videos turn out great! I've done very basic editing of those videos (extremely basic) thus far - I normally do a lot of cropping on my iPhone.

My son was in a Rep tournament on the weekend and I leant another parent my DSLR, but she managed to switch the DSLR from AutoFocus to Manual Focus and majority of the pictures she took didn't turn out.

I realise you can probably play the video on the iPhone and screen grab, but is there a better way?

Can I/What is the best way - for me to create stills from my videos which I took on the day. Currently I have Lumafusion, and can access iMovie. I have the videos stored on my iPhone and on my MBP.

Really appreciate your help!

If you already have the video on your Mac, use the great video player IINA.
There you can navigate frame-by-frame by pressing , and . (previous / next frame).
To save the current frame, press cmd+S.
A *.png file is saved to ~/Pictures/Screenshots
It's extracted from the video, not a normal screen grab.

Got it and it's awesome, thank you!

Any idea how I can fix this? The video isn't over exposed like this

Ouch, it's an HDR video. Apparently IINA has a problem with capturing stills from HDR videos.
I only record SDR and therefore never noticed before. Sorry.

Maybe iMovie can export correctly tonemapped stills but I have never used it.
Hopefully others have a proper solution!
My quick results from an iPhone HDR (Dolby Vision) clip:
- VLC works but screenshot is rather flat
- 'QuickTime Player.app' with 'Preview.app' is a bit darker but more detailed than 'VLC'
- macOS 'Screenshot.app' is overexposed

In 'VLC', the next frame can be called by pressing E and the frame is saved with the menu Video > Snapshot or the keys opt ⌥+cmd ⌘+S.
It is saved to ~/Pictures

In 'QuickTime Player.app' navigate to frame with arrow keys. Click File > Copy or press cmd ⌘+C.
Open 'Preview.app' and select cmd ⌘+N or File > New from Clipboard.
