EDITED to add: I have done more research and feel a bit more knowledgeable now about the latest few models and differences. Still it’d be helpful to hear from folks who have had their newer ATV for 1 year or more and been either content with the 32/64 choice, and more recently the 64/128gb.

———

It seems the latest Apple TV has been out for a while, so I wonder if people could help me decide on 32 or 64 gb option? I would use the ATV for mostly streaming, we do have 20-30 movies stored / purchased but I think that might be in the iCloud since our current ATV is 3rd generation.

So I’m guessing 32gb is fine, but it’s such a small price difference I might just pick 64 in case it’s usable somehow. Would appreciate any input or aspects I may be missing out on, with regards to things that type of storage is needed for.

Thanks.

Are you getting the 2021 ATV4K2 or the 2022 ATV4K3 that just launched?

The newest 2022 Apple TV 4K has two storage options, 64GB and 128GB. The price was lowered as well from the previous model.

If you do not play games and just use streaming apps like ATV+, Netflix, HBO Max, etc. even the 64GB would be overkill.

If you think you might get into games or Apple Arcade on the Apple TV, then just get the 128GB model. Games can fill up storage quick.

The 64 model of the 2022 (not the 2021) does not have Ethernet, nor does it have Thread support. So even if you do not play games, if Ethernet and/or Thread support is important to you, spend the $20 extra and get the 128GB model.

Oh yeah, if you are getting any of the older Apple TVs, 2015, 2017, or 2021, the only difference between the two tiers in any given year is the storage size, 32GB and 64GB. Everything else is the same.

Again, if you are just using simple streaming apps and no games, then the 32GB will be more than adequate.

Gotcha, thanks! That’s what I thought, just wanted to make sure. I didn’t realize there was a recent updated “4K3” vs “4K2” this year, I guess the ones listed at Costco.com are probably 2021 models then. (EDIT: they have 64/128 options now for “3rd gen” 4K models.)
Thanks for the reply!

Upon further squinting to get the model number A1469 on my apple TV and looking that up, it‘s apparently 3rd generation. Also I did read the handy MR buyer’s guide info, so I’m getting a little more up to speed with the differences between 2021 and 2022 models. probably base storage for either will be fine like you mentioned.
Thanks
