If I go to "About This Mac" then click storage my OSX_EL (El Capitan) partition looks as if it displays the correct info for each file category. But High Sierra seems to have lumped a lot of stuff under the "Documents" category. Is this normal?

Try reindexing Spotlight. That will often fix that incorrect readout.

Run this command in Terminal and give it 30 minutes or so to complete.

Code:
sudo mdutil -E /

As far as I can tell it is finished indexing, still looks the same. Most of the files under documents are in fact Photos. However they are mainly in various RAW formats. Sigma .X3F, Nikon .NEF, Samsung .SAM
so maybe High Sierra doesn't recognise the as Photos. Not a big deal.

Thanks for your advice

Booted back to El Capitan and both partitions contain the correct info. So it must be an High Sierra thing!!
