For the record, both Mac's are on the latest version of Big Sur.

So, I bought an Intel 16 inch 2019 model macbook pro around one month ago. I am a web developer so I install a lot of programs of course for my work and that is what this laptops main use is, work.

So I have my chrome extensions, some programs etc. All my usual stuff I have on my Windows machine.

I noticed that after a week or so, sometimes when I closed the macbook over for a short period of time and lift it back open, it wouldn't wake! usually, it wakes instantly but it only occurs when using the macbook for an extended period of time.

I figured out, that it takes between 50-55 seconds for it to wake. Every, single, time.

I spoke to technicians from Apple on the phone and they couldn't figure it out, so I just returned the mac to be safe, incase its a hardware issue. I ended up getting a brand new M1 Air from Apple directly, great, right?

---

Skip forward to now. I have used the laptop for around 14 days and now again, same issue! After a period of time using the mac throughout the day, I closed it over and lift it open soon after, 50-55 seconds to wake. Again, senior tech's cannot figure out what is going on!

Here is how I can reproduce the bug.

1. Close laptop over
2. Wait 10 seconds
3. Open Macbook, black screen, no keyboard light.
4. Wait 50-55 seconds
5. Macbook wakes up

---

The ONLY fix to stop it happening, is to restart my Mac and it stops. Even while keeping 'reopen all windows' ticked, the issue stops. It wakes up instantly with zero issues. And again, after using the mac for an extended period of time, the issue returns. Here is a log for your pleasure of this happening.

Timescale.

1. Closed Mac over at 01:39:50
2. Opened it at 01:40:00
3. Mac wakes up at 01:40:55, exactly 55 seconds.

The tech from Apple thought it was spotlight causing it, so we tried completely disabling it and the issue still occurred, so it is turned back on for now so ignore the mdworker lines. We have also tried these steps:

1. Checking battery settings are ok
2. Scanning Harddrive for health and virus's
3. Closing every single process down apart from core Mac proccesses
4. Disabling all startup programs

Anybody got any suggestions?

Any magnets near the machine? It might be thinking that the lid is still closed. Odd that it’s appearing on the M1 machine…

Any programs that hook into the OS?

Nope! Doesn't matter where the laptop is. And yeah I agree, strange too that it happened on both machines that are brand new.

I would uninstall the chrome extensions and see what happens. If that doesn’t work, I would uninstall chrome. The machine is not asleep as it is logging events and chrome is showing up around the time you open the lid.

Should the machine have absolutely zero logs when it is in sleep?

I’m not a macOS expert, but I wouldn’t expect that much activity. You might try just ensure Chrome is not running on one of your tests.

also boot in safe mode and see if you can recreate the problem

Well, when it was happening, I closed every process apart from core Mac processes and the issue still occurred. I didn't close individual processes in the CPU tab though, like Chrome Helper. You think that is maybe the problem?

It’s worth a shot. I think safe mode should keep the helper from launching as well

Yeah, definitely try booting in Safe Mode. That should stop any 3rd party apps from running at login. FWIW, I went a while without installing Chrome on my M1 MBP, but then tried using it again for work and immediately noticed slowdowns with Finder and my CPU spiking randomly. I uninstalled Chrome following the notes from this article, and now I'm back to normal again.

There are quite a few people reporting that Big Sur cashes when sleeping. While this isn't the problem you describe, It might be worth trying the solution of resetting SMC because keyboard not lighting up can be an SMC solution.
However, I would certainly first try testing using Safe mode. As others have said, this is one of the things Safe mode is for.

Upgrading to macOS Monterey has been reported to fix at least one annoying Chrome error:

Google Chrome Helper[5056]: Libnotify: notify_register_coalesced_registration failed with code 9 on line 2835

...So if a Macbook's wake from sleep issues are sometimes connected to Chrome running at the time as when you wake the Macbook from sleep, I wonder if Monterey might also fix that.

FWIW although I do have Chrome installed, I don’t use it as my daily browser, and never leave it open overnight. I still have random ‘wake from sleep’ issues. Could be the Google Updater running in the background?

What specific wake from sleep issues are you seeing? Is your Macbook waking unexpectedly while it's in sleep mode, or is it failing to wake normally when you tap a key on the keyboard, or when you open the display lid (from "clamshell mode")? Also, is the problem happening on the same M1 Macbook Pro you describe as having in an earlier comment?

Same M1 MBP from November 2020. I don’t seem to have any issues just opening the lid to use it, mainly the issues are when I’m in clamshell mode connected to my Belkin dock. Sometimes when I try to wake from sleep by moving the trackpad or pressing a key on the keyboard, there’s nothing. I then open the lid to see it reboot with a kernel panic. And macOS 12.3 and up seems to MOSTLY have resolved this. I’ve only had 2 kernel panic errors in the last 2+ weeks or so.
