as it stands now, there is no way to do anything else except install 15.1. Apple has broken its promise and no one is holding them accountable
Because 14.8.1 is the latest version of iOS 14. If a higher one was available it would show up at the bottom. See my screenshot on 14.8 below.
14.4 here, only 15.1 is offered.
14.4 never had the capability to install later iOS 14 versions in Settings ever since 15.0 came out. Only 14.5 and later have the feature to offer two different updates. On 14.8 you can still choose:

I figured they weren't strongly committed to letting people stay on iOS 14. The fact that they stopped signing iOS 14 IPSWs and don't even distribute an IPSW for the latest iOS 14 update says that even more so.

It's only a matter of time before they push iOS 15 and force people on supported devices to update to keep getting security updates.

The iOS 15 update has now gone back to its rightful place and I’m told I’m up to date with 14.8.1!

My wife’s phone on 14.8 still offers 14.8.1 at the top and 15.1 at the bottom. My phone on 14.8.1 says I am up to date but also offers 15.1. No scandal here.

Maybe there's a rogue Apple employee - is that you, Tim? - trying a switch-a-roo in Cupertino.

Just a thought, if things are flip-flopping...

For those who don’t want to see the red dot. Is it possible to “remove” the Settings app from the Home Screen so it only appears on the App Library screen?

Looks like the iOS 15 updated has reverted back to being at the bottom of the Software Update page.

Yesterday it was up front and center with the red badge on the Settings app icon. Now after reloading the Software Update page the update is back at the bottom - red badge is still there though…

Seems like Apple reversed the change. My device just prompted me to install 14.8.1 instead of 15 which has been moved back to the bottom. Weird..

Same here but I still got the red notification number 1 shown on settings icon

You could try and start the iOS 15.1 update and then delete it from Settings > General > iPhone storage, red dot should be gone then

Yes it is! Not sure why you didn't just try it instead of asking here; it took me two seconds to check.

Thankyou. I didn’t want to risk deleting the Settings app and then not be able to re-install it. Would be a disaster.

Hi, anyone else on iOS 14.8.1 that noticed the iOS 15 update left its place in the bottom of the screen and now shows up as a "normal" update? The text about being up-to-date on 14.8.1 is gone. The change happened today, a couple of hours ago.

(I have automatic install and download of updates disabled)
My iPad or iPhone hasn’t changed

My iPad Air 2020 is back to showing the 14.8.1 update installed and has the 15 update at the bottom of the page. It did show the 15 update first for a few days, but I never got the red dot on the Settings icon.

My guess is that this was just another of the countless SNAFUs made by crappy Apple developers who apparently have ? for brains these days…

Why's it on the home screen in the first place? You change things in there THAT frequently?

If you do this, it won't download again unless I tell it to right? I don't want it to somehow install the update while I'm sleeping because it just felt like it.

This started happening yesterday on my iPhone 11 Pro on iOS 14.8.1. I’m extremely annoyed.

I’m just going to hide the settings app and just use the search (swiping down on the Home Screen) to look for the settings app. In no time it will be a Siri suggestion and it will be convenient.

Urgh, the dreaded red dot started appearing for me too

For those using a DNS-level ad/tracker blocker service like NextDNS, I found this list of domains on Reddit that blocks system updates but keep app updates working:

Code:
mesu.apple.com
appldnld.apple.com
swscan.apple.com
xp.apple.com
gdmf.apple.com

Before blocking, I initiated the iOS 15.1 update, then went to Settings > General > iPhone storage and deleted the iOS update from there. With the red dot gone, I turned on blocking of above domains and things seem to work so far.

I really hope there is some backlash about this
Yeah, it's back!!

So I'm just gonna quote my earlier post here about removing the update via DNS blocking (no jailbreak needed, I should add)

It will remove the red dot and also the update banner inside the Settings app
