I've been seeing/hearing a lot of mention about SWT (Standard Widget Toolkit) recently and now I'm curious as to what SWT is exactly. All I know at this point is that its the major component of Eclipse. Here are the major questions I have:

1) What exactly is the Standard Widget Toolkit?
2) What is the main purpose/reason for having it?
3) Is it meant to be an alternative to Swing? and if so, what exactly the advantages of SWT over Swing?
4) At what kind of Java developer is SWT aimed at?

Any help with this is appreciated. :)
