Syncing Music Help

So I synced some music (5 songs to test) to my Apple Watch and for some reason it won't let me play then without bluetooth headphones... It keeps trying to play music from my phone and won't let me select Apple Watch as the source... is that normal?

I thought you could play music out of the Apple Watch Speaker

You can't play music over the built-in speaker.

Mine has yet to be delivered but what I gather is that if you are currently paired with your phone you can access all your music from there. If you are out running and want to listen to music on your watch you need to have bluetooth headphones. This was a selling point for me, not needing to have my phone with me while running.
