As Halloween is here, it feels like the perfect time to bring out the top horror games for Mac.

My favorite is hands-down Alien: Isolation (a fine, well-optimized port by the way).
But SOMA, Amnesia games and Outlast are terrific too.

This is a nice overview from Mac Gamer HQ of some of the best ones for Mac

It's not squarely in the Horror genre, but if you haven't played the Half-Life series or their spin-off games, then you're sorely missing out.

There's always creepy but not visually great browser games: http://www.y8.com/games/nox_timore

Since you said Amnesia, you can try the mod game someone made: Penumbra Necrologue: http://store.steampowered.com/app/346290/
Keep in mind that it's supposed to be an epilogue for Penumbra, which you can get the whole series for $2 right now: http://store.steampowered.com/app/22180/

There are a few decent indie horror games:
Blameless (free): http://store.steampowered.com/app/530330/
Remake of Silent Hill P.T. - PuniTy (free): https://jedlondo.itch.io/punity
Case: Animatronics ($10 - on sale today): http://store.steampowered.com/app/489360/

For a fun imaginative game (and totally worth the $1 they're asking right now)(also on iOS): http://store.steampowered.com/app/368650/

If you don't mind wine, there are some decent indie horror games that work well under it (and a lot of free stuff). Indie devs don't typically use complex DirectX calls.

Alan Wake runs well under Wine now (or PlayOnMac I'm assuming - since I use Crossover). I would put that high on my list of psychological horror games.

As I remember (never played it) the premise of AI is you are a civilian without much if any substantial weapons running around trying to avoid being chomped? That's why I never played it. It's bad enough when facing these things armed. ;)

...and I seem to have lost my taste for horror games in general , although scifi horror maybe. :)
