Fact #1: Alert tones are customizable. Like almost all of them. From calendar alerts to voicemail to the sound it makes when you send an e-mail. Everything!

Fact #2: despite the fact that Apple wants you to buy alert tones from them, it appears the .m4r ringtones we can already create on our own can be used as alert tones.

Hence what will likely be an orgy of customization and a proliferation of ideas for great sounds to match various iOS events.

So? How are you customizing your alert tones? Where are you getting your sounds?

...okay, I'll start. Here's the classic Wilhelm Scream.

You beat me to making this thread! I want to suggest that instead of linking to tones online, we should upload them for others to use. For texts, I use the "pause" sound from the original Super Mario Bros. game.

Love it. I've had the Super Mario theme as a ringtone for ages. I use it for my alarm clock sound.

You can download a bunch of other SMB sounds from Audiko: http://audiko.net/ringtone/Super+Mario

So far, I've only made one custom tone; I set the text message tone to be the "1-up" sound from Super Mario World.

I used the one from the original SMB first but it was too jarring. The SMW one is perfect and just as noticeable.

I wonder the lady that did the computer in Star Trek ever recorded such things for fans? Would be fun to use her voice for things like new voicemail and calendar alerts. :)

Go to this link: http://audiko.net/

It's the easiest way to make any type of tone. Save the tone, then drag it into iTunes and sync. It will be under the tones menu now. You can also download other already made tones. ALL FREE.

Just make sure you click the iPhone link when you save/download.

When I made a tone it can only used as a ringtone, how can I make it a text tone?

1) Find a sound

2) Upload to http://www.audiko.net or find another way to make an .m4r of it (same way you make an iPhone ringtone)

3) Import your new .m4r into iTunes, notice it shows up under ringtones

4) Sync

5) Pick the new ringtone as your new sound for ...well for whatever you want to use that sound for. I'm using cartoon015.wav for my SMS tone and I converted it with Audiko.

Sorry, I was super busy the last few days.

Here's the MacStartup Tone. As a bonus here is also the Old Spice Whistle Tone and a Chrono Cross Alert.
