In the tradition of the cheese grater Mac Pro, the new Colander Mac Pro has arrived!!!

Good grief, that thing is... well, homely. But it sounds like a nice piece of hardware. I want on of those 1.5 TB units.

Oh, I'm amazed by what the specs are- it's just so seriously ugly! The back of that display... OUCH!

Six grand for the base model. I don't need that kind of power, but if I did, I probably would have fainted at that point in the presentation...but as I don't work in that realm, maybe that's considered reasonable. I do like the design, though. The very first Mac I ever used was a cheese grater in grad school (2006)...memories...

It's an outrageous price and Apple is keeping this priced for pro's only.

The $6,000 includes a measly RX580 GPU, 8 core, 32GB of memory, and a 256GB SSD.

I do find the SSD to be way too small, but, honestly... the price seems good to me. Except for that stand.

I’m flabbergasted. They sure did listen to the professionals though - those with deep pockets producing for the BBC and running around with 8K cameras. I’m sure Scorsese and Hans Zimmer are thrilled.

Not too eager about the proprietary graphic cards once again.

A sign of the times, sadly. If you can get away with Windows, I cant recommend enough, after ten years of Mac I built my own PC a few months ago and it's working out great.

im ok with the small system drive. I only need it for software and os. Everything else is huge.

For actual pro expenditure it's not actually that bad, if I needed it at my desk my employer wouldn't balk at $6k, or more for an upgraded system. If I go with the new 15" MBP when I request an update this summer (mulling asking for a 13" instead) it'll already be ~$4k. I don't need the MP for my job, but I'm sure a couple of our designers will request them.

tl;dr if it's an actual business expense the MP is priced decently, but I'm not buying one for home to replace my 2010 anytime soon.

But the capabilities are well beyond what that 2008 MP had. The technology is exponentially more advanced. My ex-wife is a graphics artist. The computers she used at work cost $10,000 or more- in 1992- and were nowhere near this powerful. Maybe I am just very used to very expensive computers at work (I do not work as a programmer on desktop machines, or web apps, but on large systems. They aren't inexpensive.

I'll never have one. Heck, I'll never be able to afford a new MBP since I will retire within a few months. But what they will be able to do with the machines impresses the heck out of me.

I am afraid to find out the cost of one loaded for bear, though.

Did you like the price

I was hoping for $4999 with 32GB/1TB SSD/Vega 56 or even a Vega 48. The 580X is old hat and the 256GB SSD in the base Pro box is laughable. Even 512GB would be palatable. The $999 for the stand is someone at Apple smoking crack! Even the audience sputtered on that one.
