I will never understand why people buy these beautiful machines, and then put them in cases. It'd be like buying a beautiful piece of mid century modern furniture and covering it in plastic always.
I totally understand why they do it; they want their machine they worked really hard to afford to stay flawless. I see your point, though. I actually moved away from cases when I realized they were causing more damage than not using them. Dirt would get in and scratch the **** out of metal. I just use a sleeve now. It’s not perfect though; my iPad slid across my space gray mbp and marked it up. Can’t fix the marks though. The iPad removed the anodization.

This is why I ordered a silver mbp this time around lol.

It's amazing how those tapered edges in previous MacBook designs really gave the illusion of a thinner machine. And I know I am in the minority here, but I'd much prefer an option for Thunderbolt ports only. I hate having ports, slots and connectors that I will never use, but I know many others will, so I will allow them (jk). ;)

For example: someone is living with animals.. and No I do not mean people.

I'm not quite sold on this model yet. Is that 14 or 16 version? If it's the 16 then I think it's OK. The thickness wouldn't bother me as much because it has the bigger screen and isn't meant to be super portable. If that's the 14, the IDK...

That thing looks chunky. (Not that it’s a bad thing just surprised)
Yeah, honestly, looks like a much older MBP. Not that I’m complaining, I’m glad they went this way. But I also like the elegance of the previous gen.

And another comparison for those wondering…

14” MBP 2021

Height 0.61 inch (1.55 cm)

Width: 12.31 inches (31.26 cm)

Depth: 8.71 inches (22.12 cm)

Weight: 3.5 pounds (1.6 kg)

13” MBP 2012–2015

Height: 0.71 inch (1.8 cm)

Width: 12.35 inches (31.4 cm)

Depth: 8.62 inches (21.9 cm)

Weight: 3.46 pounds (1.57 kg)

Need the comparison between the new models and the outgoing 2016-2020 MBP 13”

I get all the arguments for why it needed to be thicker - to allow the return of the ports, improved thermal management perhaps, better battery capacity, etc. But there is no escaping that it looks a little old-fashioned relative to the elegance of the generation introduced in 2016.

I imagine there must have been enormous internal battles at Apple over whether or not this was the right thing to do. And… I don’t know… I think this design will age poorly.

Interesting that almost ALL the marketing materials seem to be pushing the Silver 16". I have yet to see a single marketing photo with either a Space Grey or 14" MBP. Wonder why?

I really dislike the tapered edges, work laptop is still the last generation model. The air vents are so sharp it cuts on my palm or nearly. My 14" is so much better no more sharp edges.
