Time Machine and iCloud

Does Time Machine back up files I put on iCloud? I’ve started storing more of my sporadically used files on iCloud but I’m not sure if they’re getting backed up onto time machine

TM only backs up what is stored on the local drive.

Does that mean it backs up files stored in iCloud if they’re downloaded?

Yes, if the file in iCloud is downloaded to your machine, it will get backed up. If it's not on your machine and just showing as a placeholder, then it will not get backed up.

You could always go into Time Machine and check yourself just to confirm things are looking the way you want it to.
