Hey all. I have a 15" MacBook Pro 2014 that suffers from the "random shutdown issue" explained here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7697352?page=8 and here https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/433516/MacBook+Pro+Shuts+down+randomly.

Basically, newer versions of MacOS dropped the Intel CPU into lower c-states than the laptop was designed for, and at idle it will become unstable and power off suddenly. Some people have fixed it by disabling a thunderbolt-ethernet kext file. Other use a headless HDMI dongle to keep the dGPU active. I got myself a copy of this https://realmacmods.com/product/macbook-pro-nocrash-utility/ which runs a script in the background preventing the crash, which works very well.

Like many of you, I'm eagerly awaiting the new Macbook Pro's coming this fall. I'm wondering if I should bother trading in my 2014 macbook for a few hundred dollars, or if the place receiving them will have a problem with my 'random shutdown issue" that's so common in these years. I could certainly argue that this is a bug in the newer OS (high sierra didn't have this problem) but really I'm at the mercy of the trade-in authority.

Has anyone traded in a Macbook with this problem? How did it go?

Have you checked locally how much you can get? Selling the Mac with that issue will be hard due to the fact that not many would like to have a "new" computer with such handicap. It might ding you on the final value.

Yeah, that is an option! Selling through the typical venues is a lot of hassle compared to a trade in service.
Wherever you trade or sell it, I think it's best to disclose the issue upfront.
Agreed! I don’t mean to keep it a secret, that would be pretty crappy of me, I’m just curious if anyone has done the trade in with an affected unit and how much it affects the value.
