Downgraded my software via Time Machine. External hard drive failed. Data was recovered from failed external HD, but not this particular .dmg.

Did a Disk Drill scan of my mac HD and .dmg was recovered. But this is the error message I get when I try to open it:

The following disk images couldn’t be opened
Reason: no mountable file systems

The .dmg doesn’t mount in Disk Utility to run a repair. Tried right clicking on .dmg for Get Info window and changed Open With from DiscImageMounter to Disk Utility. The .dmg then appears in Disc Utility as a one line entry, but not the standard 2 line entry. Tried to repair, but DU quickly stops with the following response in red:
Verify volume failed: Unrecognized file system.

Any chance of recovering data from this .dmg? If so, how?

I am running Mavericks/OSX version on a late 2009 iMac (I know, I know…ancient).

Thanks.
