trying to use a power outlet to charge ipod - problem with USB adapter?

A month ago I bought an USB adapter so I could use the ipod touch USB cable and plug it into the power outlet on the wall. It worked fine, but the docking station I was using it with had a glitch. A month went by and I got my new dock. But now the iPod gets no power from the adapter. Both the ipod USB cable and the adapter works fine, as I am using the cable on the Mac now, and the adapter works with another USB unit.

What is wrong here?

do you think it would help if I got an apple adapter? They are just so expensive, but if that's the only solution...
