getting the no symbol. I changed all the firmware security settings. The only thing I can think of is the macbook pro 2019 13" 2tb3 is at 10.14.6 and the external drive is at 10.14.5? Would this really effect the start up?

The 10.14.5 could be the problem.

The 2019 13" MBP shipped with macOS 10.14.5 (18F2058). Note the build number. It is not the regular 10.14.5 build number which was 18F132. Often new Macs have special builds of macOS that adds support for new Mac until the next macOS incremental release which would also include support for the new Mac.

Thanks for that. I will upgrade the external to 10.14.6 tonight and see if it fixes. I will update the thread if its the solution.

ok this appears to have been the issue. It looks like the os on each machine must be the same or atleast sometimes this is true.
