My SSD benchmark under OS X is ~ 745/725 MB read/write

Under Bootcamp / Windows 8.1 it's a different story; Looking at the 4K read/write speed, it's really disappointing with a 15/25 MB read/write; most SSD drives around are in the range of 30-40/60-90 MB/s for the 4K random bench.

What's really strange is that disabling the write caching for the drive will literally kill the drive writing speed ! I know what cache writing is and what I know is that it should not affect your drive performance; if anything, disabling write caching should improve your score.

My SSD 4K alignment is fine and drive health / wear level is Excellent. Trimming is enabled.

So what's the deal ?

EDIT - Steps to tweak your SSD

Run cmd ( command prompt ) as administrator and enable the hidden power features :

powercfg -attributes SUB_PROCESSOR 06cadf0e-64ed-448a-8927-ce7bf90eb35d -ATTRIB_HIDE
powercfg -attributes SUB_PROCESSOR 12a0ab44-fe28-4fa9-b3bd-4b64f44960a6 -ATTRIB_HIDE
powercfg -attributes SUB_PROCESSOR 40fbefc7-2e9d-4d25-a185-0cfd8574bac6 -ATTRIB_HIDE
powercfg -attributes SUB_PROCESSOR 4b92d758-5a24-4851-a470-815d78aee119 -ATTRIB_HIDE
powercfg -attributes SUB_PROCESSOR 7b224883-b3cc-4d79-819f-8374152cbe7c -ATTRIB_HIDE
powercfg -attributes SUB_PROCESSOR 943c8cb6-6f93-4227-ad87-e9a3feec08d1 -ATTRIB_HIDE

It's better to select the high performance plan or create a duplicate one with the following settings :

1 - Go Control Panel
2 - Power Options
3- Change Plan settings
4- Change advanced Plan Settings

Set the following values for processor power management :

Processor performance increase threshold :30%
Processor performance decrease threshold :85%
Processor performance decrease policy : Ideal
Processor Idle demote threshold : 85%
Processor Idle promote threshold :100%
Minimum processor state :100%
System cooling :Active
Maximum processor state :100%

Performance gain 250-300% 4K read/write | access time twice lower | 20% increase in sequential read/write

Updating the intel rst driver should help. Not seen anywhere near that bad a performance in bootcamp, worse than a legacy bootcamp setup on an older mac.

Having said that I've stayed away like a barge pole from using 8.1 as much as possible, only installed once on a nMP which had to have it. The next nMP will be an EFI win 7 install so when my pal finishes editing all the XML files in the bootcamp installers to remove any 8 only hurdles in its config!

I'm afraid there is no Intel rapid storage for Z87 boards. Intel has discontinued it. I'm stuck with Msahci.

My system is iMac 27 late 2013 Core i7.

Oh dear, you could try these links:

Standard RST

http://www.win-raid.com/t2f23-Intel-R-RST-RSTe-Drivers-actual-v-Beta-v-WHQL.html

Thought the later drivers do support the Z87 stuff but it's not territory I've gone to.

Fernando modded drivers link:

http://www.win-raid.com/t11f23-Modded-Intel-AHCI-and-RAID-Drivers.html

At your own risk, may want to register and see if he can help you by modding your config. He's done so with the MCP79 stuff with me years ago and is very helpful indeed.

Ok I'm writing you from my OSX because I updated the SATA driver to Intel 8series/c220 WHQL but Windows won't boot now, not even to safe mode.

Kinda funny situation. I have now something to spend my time on.

System restore to roll back to the older SATA driver? Then your model must boot into some kind of legacy mode like the older macs did before the people over on insanely mac figured out how to get it working. This post is where that all started if you fancy being a test subject.

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/to...th-intel-chipset-in-ahci-win7-vista-xp-linux/

Me personally - if you've been modding your bootcamp install files as I think you could have possibly I would get the data off, wipe and start over and see if the disk performance is up to scratch by essentially starting from scratch!

The irony is that I can't start the computer into safe mode under Windows 8.1 unless it's going to boot.

There is no Last Known Good Configuration whatsoever. I can't access the console.

Interesting....

Edit :

Back to Windows. I had to bless the drive from terminal in OSX to boot in legacy.

Looks like I'm stuck with this slow performance for the time being. I already installed Windows twice in the last 3 weeks and the numbers reported look identical.

Looks like you are in the situation we were back in 2009 for the Mac Pro when the old Intel SATA controller in AHCI mode was finally figured out! I'm glad I've not had to go there yet and will stick with using 7 full stop for my clients unless I really have to under their instruction as they will be paying me to do it. Too many memories of BSOD hell flooding back, I wish you luck!

Thanks mate. I came across this : http://www.thessdreview.com/our-reviews/2013-macbook-air-ngff-pcie-ssd-review/4/

Same drive but 256GB; looks like the drive itself is slow at 4K ( the slowest they have witnessed on a SSD )

Not sure what's the deal with all that PCIe marketing hype. The least thing I would care about in a drive is the sequencial read/write speed tbh.

Thing is though on bootcamp with 8.1 with the nMP performance was what I would call blistering, that has a similar Apple pin modified NGFF card also. Though it was just a brief encounter with just a setup job and running a few renders to test it out before UPS collected it to ship abroad. If I get a chance with the next can to prep I will run a 4k bench to see the results.

Edit #4...

Surprise!!!!!

4db3da00e09db3640ef33d55ee61e954.png

Hold on... that's under safe mode. Now I'm not sure what's going on. Never heard of Safe mode faster... Weird enough ? keep reading...

I went to msconfig.exe and unloaded everything, diagnostic mode : Speed is still slow...

So I doubt it's a driver or service doing anything.

Any hint or clue dear community ?

Sorry for double posting... But Another update :

I digged deeper into the issue and looks like it's the CPU driver causing all this headache; I disabled it using Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Processor
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm

Change on both the "Start" from 3 to 4

Score now :

616978eed142fd9b32f084a37c057e45.png

Much better, almost twice faster access time and a lot faster 4K read/write

Turbo boost disappeared anyway. Need more hints guys :)

I restored the registry keys to both default values and found another way to boost SSD performance by enabling hidden power features and modified it accordingly:

I just registered to thank you pal! ive been looking for an answer to slower ssd on bootcamp and can't imagine that you went through all this alone and found the solution !! My SSD speeds went 300% for 4K read write and PC feels much much faster  Kudos :)

Also random read write is now even faster than ML

Can you please share the list of loaded drivers or sys files ? im moddin bootcamp files and have problem usb external drive sleeping although power management is off. Maybe you have a hidden feature unlock for USB devices ?

Thanks :p actually I don't if you're facing the same issue with the TB external drive idling during transfer but I haven't looked around yet.

Not sure if this is what you're asking but here ya go ( it's too long im pasting it in 2 posts or so )

Hi guys! I own the latest rMBP-13 with the similar SSD SM0256F (256gb, made by Samsung), running Windows 8.1 with exactly the same low 4k perfomance issue. Read/Write scores are 15/25 MB.

If I apply these powercfg mods, will it affect my battery life? If i understand it correctly, these tweaks make the processor run at its constant default clock (in my case 2,4 GHz) without any downsteping? Just trying to figure out how to increase 4k perfomance without additional battery drain..

Actually I found that it increases the battery life for some reason ( under high performance mode only )

Ok, so I did some testing yesterday, and here are my thoughts.

These new NGFF SSDs (in latest Macbooks) utilize PCI Express lines and seem to be related to CPU perfomance as much as never before like in SATA-machines. It looks like the SSD perfomance is high when the CPU is running high too and vice versa.

And I guess the whole thing is in C-states of the CPU. The idea of this tweak is to make CPU run constantly in C1 state and not letting it go to sleep in C2, C3 etc. states. That's being said, I found out that the CPU clock doesn't affect the SDD perfomance in any case, only the current C-state matters.

So I made these 3 benchmarks:

1. High Perfomance mode (all defaults)

2. High Perfomance mode
+ Processor Idle promote threshold: 100%. Let me explain, this setting means the following thing:

IF CPU-idleness > 100% (which absolutely cannot happen in any case) THEN go to deeper C-state. That means that once the CPU wakes and goes to C1 state - it will never go back and stay there until you change this setting. AND THAT'S WHAT REALLY IMPROVES THE SSD PERFOMANCE! Gosh, just look at these numbers:

3. High Perfomance mode
+ Processor Idle promote threshold:100%
+ Minimum processor state: 100%

During the 3rd attempt we just lock the CPU multiplier at its highest point and CPU runs at highest clocks possible. (2.9 ghz in my case). During previous 2 test the CPU clock varied between 0,8-2,9 ghz according to the Intel Turbo Boost technology. But this makes no difference, look at the screenshot:

So, the verdict is - only 1 setting should be changed: Processor Idle promote threshold :100%. This makes CPU run in C1-state all the time and this makes the SSD perfomance go to the top.

TheSSDreview were wrong about the poor 4k perfomance of the Samsung XP941 SSD. Thing is not in the SSD itself, the whole thing is in proper power management in Windows.
