TWO DIFFERENT HARDDRIVES ON MY MAC ONE FULL ONE NOT????

Hi! So maybe I am really stupid- but I don't think I am truly THAT dumb!

I recently purchased a mid-2012 Mac Book Pro from Gumtree (a classifieds site in Australia)... went to their house, the laptop seemed in good condition and they said they only ever watched movies etc on it...The house i went to pick it up from seemed nice enough... they seemed like average people. Although now they don't return phone calls or anything...hmmmm... I paid $450. Down from about $600. I would love to buy a new one but I'm a uni student... beggars sometimes cannot be choosers - as the saying goes! (I HATE that saying now grrrrr) .... Anyway... before this I had a brand new Mac Air that just suddenly stopped turning on... yup... just went dead.... Luckily I had iCloud Drive and iCloud desktop so i saved most of my files .... BUT- when I got the MBP home and set it up as you usually would using your iCloud log in etc... I realised over the next week or so it got slower and slower .. I went through ALL the tips I could find online to speed it up because it just starts the coloured beach ball of death every time I open or close a program! It's driving me insane... I think I have used FORCE QUIT MORE TIMES THAN I EVER HAVE ON ALL MACS I'VE EVER USED! INCLUDING MY 2007 IMAC FFS!!! NOW THAT IS SAYING SOMETHING!!!! Upon reading about Disk Utility I went into it and examined mine and although just like on my Mac Airs info under- "About This Mac" its says "Storage - 428GB of 500GB('ish') free -(so I am using about 70gb). BUT- under DISK UTILITY- IT says two things:

In the side bar:

Then in a table under that it says the following:

I don't UNDERSTAND HOW MY HARD DRIVE (THE APPLE HDD one) is full to total capacity when I don't have have enough files and applications to fill a 128GB Mac Book Air??? And WHY is there two hard drives? It makes zero sense to me. I am going to copy and paste the info from the system report below: (It will likely take about 5 minutes to load the system report as everything literally takes MINUTES -NOT SECONDS - TO LOAD OR DO ANYTHING ON THIS MAC THE LONGER I HAVE IT!!!!

Can someone PLEASE tell me what to do? when I run First Aid on the Apple HDD (the full capacity one) it SOME TIMES says its okay and the partition map appears to be okay and then other times some thing is wring that could affect boot up do first and in recovery mode. But I just did it and for the first time ever it says its okay with a green tick?!!! But the computer is still SLOW AF!


I want to delete this 500gb of crap i clearly don't need! it's not mine clearly!

Can someone PLEASE PLEASE HELP!

I am not very smart in terms of computers.

You have ONE hard drive with 500.11 GB capacity.

No operating system in the last ten years has used the hard drive directly. There are things like partitioning, formatting for different operating systems, full disk encryption, fusion drives and so on and so on that would be very difficult to get right safely if you worked directly on the hard drive.

If you don't have Windows installed, then MacOS will just install one CoreStorage Logical Volume on your hard drive. That CoreStorage Logical Volume is 499.88 GB, and that volume is what MacOS will be using.

If you used partitions, you would have more than one volume inside this CoreStorage Logical Volume. There is one tiny "Recovery Volume" anyway that allows you to boot and use Disk Utility if everything else is deleted. There will be extra volumes if you use hard disk encryption; your CoreStorage Logical Volume would contain a huge encrypted volume of close to 500 GB, and that volume again would contain your actually data.

What you see is a bit complicated because that's what computers are nowadays, but absolutely normal.

If you want to speed up your MBP you should consider buying an SSD. They are not too expensive and will make it feel brand new, probably as fast or better than your MBA.

Look at your screenshots...

One says "Physical Drive" and the other says "Logical Volume"...

You have one hard-drive and it contains one logical partition which is the standard.

Trust disk utility. About this Mac uses the spotlight database and sometimes it is out of sync. Try reindexing and see if it clear things up:

Repair disk permissions on logical drive with Disk Utility before going any further.

That is expected.

The Apple HDD is the physical volume (Drive itself)
The Macintosh HD is the logical volume (Partition)

Macintosh HD is partitioned to use the total capacity of the Physical volume resulting in the used space on the physical volume being full.

Nothing unusual there.

In other words your slowness on the Mac is due to something else

EDIT: It is possible though that the drive is failing, that could cause the Mac to become increasingly slow

I ended up calling apple (even though it said my mac was too old to call them on the Apple site from my serial number) and the man didn't even think twice before screen sharing and helping me! He said it is totally normal) But I AM going to get SSD - I think that advice is great! Thanks all! Liv.
