Hi there,

I'm having an issue with a MAC that we use, it has recently been wiped as this was going to be issued to a new member of staff. When I try and reinstall the software, it comes up with the error "OX X can't be reinstalled because you aren't connected to the internet".

I have gone onto network utility and checked to see what the issued is, there is data coming into the network port but the PC has been given an Apipa address. There are no restrictions on the network which is stopping this as other devices can connect through that port fine.

Any ideas please?

When posting a question for help, you should ALWAYS state
- what kind of Mac
- what year made
- what OS is/was running on it.

Does the Mac have any "proprietary" software that was installed onto it by the company techs?
Perhaps something in the firmware?

If so, could that be blocking access to "the internet at large"?

I have another way to get around this. But it will require that you use a DIFFERENT Mac that is already bootable, that is using the same version of the OS (looks like El Cap) and that DOES have a connection "to the outside world".

Do you have other Macs available?
What version of the OS do they run?
Provide all the answers to the above questions, and we'll proceed from there.

The OS of the MAC is X El Capitan
Was manufactured in 2009
Not sure on what os it had on originally as it was wiped before it got to me.

There is no proprietary software on the MAC as everything has been wiped.

We only have one other MAC and that is running macOS Mojave 10.14.3...

What I would try:

Create a bootable USB installer with El Capitan on it.
See if you can boot from it and install that way.

I have plugged a network cable directly from the switch to the Mac in both of the network ports and the issue still occurs.
This network port has been tested and works fine with the other Mac and every other devices I have tested.

There is no Wi-Fi card in the MAC to support this.
I have tried using a USB Wi-Fi dongle but this does not pick up on the Network Utility

This doesn't make any sense.
ALL Macs within the last 10+ years (or longer) have built-in wifi.
