Is it possible to unlock an iPhone which has been locked due to too many wrong passcode digits, knowing Apple ID and password, without a factory reset?

I don't think so but you can just restore it from the latest iCloud backup so you won't lose anything. This is if you didn't turn off iCloud backups.

Maybe someone knows a way though

Sadly I have not backupped my WhatsApp conversations :(
