Running Lion at the moment on my iMac. I'm thinking I want to update to the new OS. I have seen the updates on jump drives or on disc, and of course on the App Store. My question is can I go from Lion to ElCapitan or Sierra in one step, or do I need to upgrade to something in between first?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Running 10.7.5, 2.5 Ghz i5, 8 gigs RAM.

Where should I go with the above specs. Bought in August 2011.

El Capitan or Sierra will both work. Sierra is very recent and could use a bit more time to mature though. Just open the App Store and look for Sierra, or follow this link to get to El Capitan (you cannot find it by searching in the App Store). Just download either and use it. Make sure you have a backup in place.
