i am a windows/linux user

i just got a iMac from my friend and i have never used one before
the computer had mac 9.2.2
but i whiped the hard drive and put yellow dog linux on it witch was "ok" but i then got 3 cds from my friend that was Mac os X and i went to install the new OS X on my computer and this is the error i got

Essentials cannot be install on this computer. you must update your computer;s firmware before installing Mac OS X.


how do i update my computers firmware so i can install it???

You're going to have to go back to os 9.2 and go to software update under the apple in the top left hand corner of the screen. There should be about 4 or 5 updates that will come up, the firmware update being one of them. After you download you will most likely have to restart your computer and hold down a button while you do so. There will be steps that come up while you are installing the firmware update.

how much is that going to cost me?

isn't there a better alternative to me bring the computer into a apple store?
