I recently bought a refurbished late 2012 a1419 27" 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 24GB 1600 MHz DDR3. High Sierra installed.

In setting it up, went to change the name of the Admin account from "owner" to my name, and change the pwd.

I was able to change the pwd, and then unlock and change the admin account name to my name, but now the "allow user to administer this computer" box is not checked, and I'm unable to lock the make changes function even with the right password.

Can anyone help with this?

I don't have one, and the HD cam with lots of good software on it, so Im loathe to wipe it. I assume that reinstalling would remove all the non-native apps like MS and Adobe stuff.

You don't own licenses to that software and you don't know if the computer has any malware or anything else installed. The only appropriate solution is to boot up from internet recovery and erase the disk and reinstall the operating system.

If you bought it refurbished, it shouldn't still have the old admin account etc. You need to erase the drive in recovery and reinstall the OS to properly setup your account.
