Let me know how the card works out bud ?? I’m really curious since they are still available in my part of Canada and prices aren’t insane yet…

Will do. The prices have been dropping in the US, I actually saved $100 by waiting a week to purchase the GPU (brand new).

Just managed to get the Sonnet RX 560 TB3 to work in eGPU with black magic 8k encode and it works on my cMP 12 cores 2012 with OC 0.8 (made a new config) and boot screen on the eGPU ??

Thx for posting the results.

Btw, this is not a good card to check the TB3 interconnection performance decrease with MacPro5,1/6,1, it's just a PCIe v3.0 x8 card.

Always a pleasure to help the max community! I know it’s weak for a GPU but I got it for less than $200 CDN shipped and just bought it to see how Mac eGPUs worked… and if it would work… now that I know it works it’s the reason I’m going big ??

For this price, I would also bought it :p

Seems you are finding very good prices in Canada, I also saw today the Newegg Canada offer of RX 6500 XT for CDN $230 shipped (after $50 mail in rebate).

Quick info to add, I also tested in Videoproc and it supports hwaccel on the cMP when the use eGPU option in the app info is selected

What’s the best bang for the buck right now? I think it might be cheaper on Amazon Canada ?

4Gb seems a little low no? I was aiming 8-16 this time
6500XT is a entry to mid-level card, with AMD changes in the line is more or less the modern equivalent of RX 460/560 GPUs. For CDN 230, seems the best bang for the buck today - at least some people think so on TechPowerUp.

If the modded rom RX 6800 XT in eGPU doesn’t work I’ll fall back on a RX 5700 XT it’s still in my budget… I just hope I can get some RDNA 2

I am just waiting on a reply to my question if one of the new RX 6800 XT rom modded for the cMP would still work in eGPU with the 2013 Mac Pro, 2013 MBP and 2018 MBA an if I have confirmation it’s what I’ll get ??? latest chip available with all the recent technologies make it a futureproof investment ?

As far as I know, the patched ROM has not been tested against the 2013/2018 models you listed, nor has it been tested as an eGPU on any system. However, the patch shouldn't affect its ability to boot on any system (including non-Macs), and if an unmodified card should otherwise work as an eGPU, I'd expect a patched one to work just as well. I make no promises, since I don't have an RX6x00 card to test with - but the patch really does very little, so I'd be surprised if it broke anything. (Just to repeat myself - to my knowledge, the patch has NOT been tested in any of the environments you asked about, so: you're the tester!)

Also, while I was typing this, I see that you and @tsialex started discussing the RX6500XT. I have not examined any RX6500* ROMs, so I don't know if they're compatible with the patch. I just looked, and TechPowerup doesn't show any RX6500* ROMs, so I can't even do a quick sanity check for you. The current patch is only known to be valid for RX6600(XT)/RX6800(XT)/RX6900XT. (There are actually two different patches, one for 6600* and one for 6800*/6900*, which tells me that 6500* might be different. Or not - I have no idea.)

Good luck, and keep us posted.

[EDIT: If anyone out there has an RX6500*, please dump the ROM and try running the patcher on it. Even if you don't ever flash it to your card, the patcher will tell us whether or not the 6500 ROM uses the AMD reference code. If the patcher reports an error, I'll need to create an RX6500* version; if the patcher reports success, not only does your card use the AMD reference code, the patched copy of the ROM should work on your card (the patcher only does its thing if it recognizes the AMD reference code, and does nothing otherwise). If any RX6500* owners try this and get a patch failure, please PM me your ROM dump so I can have a look. Good luck!]

[EDIT 2 (29april2022): I just found two unverified RX6500 ROMs on TechPowerup, and the patcher worked on both of them. They seem to use the RX6600 reference code. Your mileage may vary.]

Worst case I’ll get a RX 6600 XT to check and if it doesn’t work it’ll be for the 3 other machines and I’ll continue to use the RX 580 on the Mac Pro… but it shouldn’t… if it work I’ll stick it in my Mac Pro and get a RX 6800 XT… what the hell it’s not like I’m not already a couple thousands in total with all my mods ??

Nice! Does sleep and wake from sleep work?
Didn’t test and I suspect it doesn’t… I don’t use sleep since I have a Plex server running, i heard there’s a resistance to unsolder on the Titan Ridge card for it to work, I’ll probably do it but not before I get My final setup ??

Keep sleep disabled until you remove the WAKE# line resistor, for some people the crashes corrupted the NVRAM volume.

Thanks for the info Alex, you saved me a lot of trouble ?? I don’t feel like replacing my cpu board with all the hardware I’m ordering slowly draining my bank account ?‍♂️?

Yes, there's a 0 Ohm resistor to remove that will prevent immediate wake on sleep due to the WAKE# signal. But having Thunderbolt devices automatically reconnect after wake from sleep is another issue with the Titan Ridge card... Luckily for you, you don't use sleep!

I’m trying to be careful as I’ve been killing some hardware accidentally lately… I have a 2010 dead backplane and a 2009 dead CPU board…
A 2008 Mac Pro octo 2.8 with a damaged logic board recognizing only 1 CPU… a Titan Ridge V1 card that won’t work anymore and a bunch of 16Gb ram sticks I have to test so I can find the faulty module(s). I’ve been slacking because of work lately.

Seriously? A RX 6600 XT definitively is not worth 2,5x the price of a RX 6500XT when benchmarks show that it performs most times below than 2x.
Well then unless someone can get an RX 6500 XT in a cMP I’m kind of not able to get this one
