Using watch gesture to forward iPhones music

I’ve got a series 9 and an iPhone 15 all running the most recent OS. Should I be able to forward the music on my phone by double tap gesturing on my watch? When I do, nothing happens on the phone.
I have my watch gesture settings to
Double tap: on
Playback: skip
Smart Stack: advance

Thanks for any advice
