I have never tried video editing but now have a use case. I have half a dozen video clips of my kids I would like to merge together into one video clip. Looking for advice on the best free / paid software tool for a novice who will use it infrequently. Thank you.

Why not start by trying iMovie? On Mac, iPhone and iPad and free. Fairly basic tools, but may do what you need

iMovie works great for the basics. If you have tons of family video you want to manage, you could step up to FCP (paid). FCP also has a more diverse tool set and is easier to use (for me).

If you just want to join the clips together with no other editing, then you can do it with Quicktime. Just open the first clip in QT, and then drag and drop the other clips into the window.

Thank you very much for the advice will give iMovie a go first although Quicktime would also do what I need.
