“Ok guys, we’re here to decide how we’re going to make the virtual keyboard work as part of the Vision Pro UI. Let’s hear it team, what should we do?”
”Well, I was thinking that when you select a text box on a window, the keyboard should position itself somewhere below the window, conveniently, so that it doesn’t block your view.”
”Interesting… I’m not sure though, anyone have other thoughts?”
”Well, as well as positioning it so it doesn’t block your window, the UI should position it in a place that is within easy typing reach of your hands.”
”Ok, well maybe. I’m just not sure we have it yet though. Anyone else want to go a different way with this?”
”Well I was thinking something totally different. I think, when you select a text field the keyboard should pop up right in front of the window, blocking your view of all the content. Then every single time you select a text box on a new window - and let‘s include the Messages app here, for maximum annoyance - you have to drag the keyboard somewhere else in order to see the window you’re typing into!”
”That’s genius! You’ve got it! Well I just don’t think UI design gets any better than this…”
”You say that, but how about this idea… the behavior should persist even if you’re using a Bluetooth keyboard. Ok, we won’t throw a full keyboard up in front of the window you’re looking at, but we will throw up a giant autocorrect suggestions window right there in front of the window you’re trying to type in. So even if you’re using a Bluetooth keyboard, you’ll have to reposition a little window each and every time you want to type into a new text window. Again, even in Messages! People will be unnecessarily forced to reposition windows all the time!”
”Great work team! Really strong stuff. Ok, that’s what we’re going to go with then. Random pop up keyboards and autocorrect boxes blocking windows. This UI is really starting to come together now. Next meeting we’ll look into selecting emojis. I’m thinking instead of letting emoji hotkeys on Bluetooth keyboards work, we should force people to go into some sub-menus to select them, but we’ll talk about that then… have a great week guys!”
