HomeKit Vpn network and HomeKit?

Does HomeKit not work with a vpn wireless network? I have two routers one for vpn and one for normal and I noticed the vpn network not working with HomeKit at all. Is there anyway around this?

I’m using one router for the appletv for vpn. I’m using the same network on my phone so I can use the remote app on my phone to use it as the controller for the tv.
So HomeKit doesn’t seem to work at all if I’m connected to the vpn router.

I have both routers plugged into the modem. The other router(non vpn router) I have the rest of my devices on in my home.
