I have a friend who recently switched to Straight Talk. They want to use their iP4 with it. He put the SIM in, but it said "no SIM found". It is jailbroken. What could be the problem? I'm an Android person, so I don't know the ins and outs of unlocking iPhones. I do know that a VZW iPhone should be unlocked out of the box.

Ok those can be unlocked by verizon but only for international gsm use.
It won't recognize or work with any US SIM cards.
I think you can get a gevey sim adapter to unlock it for domestic use but not 100%.

Is it possible to unlock it without contacting VZW?

Even if you did contact verizon they would only unlock it for international gsm use. That means for carriers outside the US.
Not straight talk.
In order to use it inside the US with other US gsm carriers you will need a gevey.
Check out their site for ios compatibility and more details.
