Looking for advice:

I currently have an Iphone 6s that needs a battery. Was thinking of replacing the battery and waiting for the SE2 to come out in March (hopefully).

Or

I can get an Iphone 8 used/refurbished for $220.

Thoughts? How long will the Iphone 8 be supported realistically?

$220 for an iPhone 8 is a solid deal. Life of support, not ending any time soon.

It depends on the immediate need they have (since today, now, there is no SE2), an iPhone 8 is ok for me, cheap price, high performance.
Go for the iPhone 8 with peace of mind.

I would put a new battery in the 6s and wait until March. If the SE2 doesn't pan out, then wait until September and pick up a close-out Xr

The 8, while a good phone, is not a meaningful upgrade over 6s at this point.
Put a 30$ new battery into the 6s if it absolutely needs it and use the money saved to buy the SE 2 (9) which will be a much better investment.
Or better still, buy a battery pack for 20$, which you’ll use with 6s, SE 2, and any other phone you might have in the next 5 years.

Thanks. Could you tell me or show a link of what a battery pack is? Is this just a kit with multiple batteries?

External battery. Powerbank. Called differently depending which part if the world you’re in. Just google it

One question is what's the battery like on the refurb/used iPhone 8?

Realistically, I reckon the 8 will receive software updates for at least another 3 years considering the iPad 10.2 released in late 2019 still sports an Apple A10 chip.

Personally, since battery replacement has dropped from $99 down to $49, I'm inclined to just opt for a battery replacement and waiting for the SE2/9. Chances are that's the last iPhone sporting the old form factor and TouchID so I'd prefer to have one with the fastest chipset available.

Wait for the SE2. We're too close to launch at this point.

The iPhone 8 only has 2GB of RAM and may not perform well in the future.

Might as well wait for SE2. Word is it will launch in about 2 months time. March 2020.

If Apple reflects what they did four years ago, it would launch in March, as the original SE did in 2016. I’m guessing somewhere in the latter part of March, probably around April/late in the first quarter. They might also have another educational keynote, where we _might_ see it during that time.

There isn’t going to be a “SE2”.
The SE hasn’t been refreshed for FOUR YEARS.
There will be a follow up to the 8 with a 4.7 inch screen that’s as good as you gonna get.

Which is what the SE2 will be really, no one knows the name yet, but it’s going to be a cheap phone in an older chassis albeit with slight revisions with the latest processor and camera, but just the one lens I expect.
