Wanted: iMac G4 (last OS 9-bootable) Restore Disc set.

Posted it in the marketplace, but figure this kind of thing is generally allowed here, too.

Just acquired a mid-2002 iMac G4, and want the original restore disc set for it. It's the last iMac that can natively boot OS 9, and requires its Restore disc to install OS 9, since it came out after Mac OS 9.2.2.

A few queries...

Are you chasing just the OS9 System Folder and basic Applications or,

OS 9 System Folder, basic Applications and bundled OS9 Applications like iMovie & iDVD, or

Do you know the 691 number(s) you are chasing?

Since you've noted in the marketplace that it's a 17" 800Mhz, according to my knowledge, you'll want a 9.2.2/10.1.5 set.

The AHT with that set MUST be AHT v1.2.2 which was introduced with the 17" version. The problem here is that AHT v1.2.2 also shipped with earlier G4 iMacs and late model Slot Loading iMacs from the iMac (Summer 2000) onwards.

The iMac (17" Flat Panel) also shipped with a 9.2.2/10.2.0 but this set may have been crippled to not boot into OS9 despite it appearing that the non OS9 booting iMacs from serial number xx303xxxxxx or later were crippled in hardware.

Which also begs the question:

What is your iMac's serial number?

EDIT: the "MacOS Rom File" needed for 9.2.2 for this 17 model of iMac is v9.5.1. The 15" only required "MacOS Rom File" v9.0.1

I have (since posting) managed to get a booting 9.2.2, by copying over the 9.2.2 System Folder from my 12" PowerBook G4's original 10.2/9.2.2 restore set (which included it solely to run 'Classic',) but that System Folder is missing pieces, and is a bare-minimum install. If I try to include the missing pieces from a 9.2.1-patched-to-9.2.2, it crashes on boot.

Yes, I'm looking for the 10.1 set, not the 10.2 set.

Never did. Still running on "it works" 9.2.2 (from a NetBoot image Apple had on their website for a while, IIRC,) and 10.2, not the original 9.2.2+ / 10.1.

Is this the set you're seeking: Mac OS 9.2.2 & 10.1.2 (iMac G4 (early 2002))

If so they're available on the ever popular web site where Mac users go to find older software. It has the following:

Restore discs for the iMac G4 (2002). Ten disc set includes:

- Software Restore (six discs)
- Apple Hardware Test for the iMac G4
- Applications CD
- Mac OS 9 Install CD (9.2.2 - machine specific)
- Mac OS X Install CD (10.1.2)

Says it works with the mid-2002 iMac G4 too.

Unfortunately, I need the set that is 9.2.2 plus 10.1.3. The 17" iMac G4 uses the GeForce MX4 GPU, not the MX2 that the 15" uses. 10.1.2 doesn't have those drivers. And I really want the original discs, since I already have a functioning OS on the system, the discs are desired for completeness.

I found something in the meantime, it’s a compiled version of Mac OS 9, and I was able to boot off it, it was made in 2013 for Macs that had rare drivers like our iMac G4 mid-2002. It worked for me, you just have to follow the instructions. Although you will need to format your drive... you might be able to create a partition without erasing your stuff with 10.5 but if not, you will need to back up everything. I have the iMac from July 17 2002, with a GeForce4 MX 32MB, PowerMac 4,5
