This weeks theme is Architectural Details . All the bits of decorative trim that folks stick on structures that serve no particular structural purpose but are just stuck on because they look nice , or impress people . Think gingerbread on Victorian era houses , gargoyles and miscellaneous saints on cathedrals . That sort of stuff .
The contest starts NOW , and will conclude on 9 October , 12pm EDT .

Have Fun!!

As always, standard rules apply:

  • The photographs must be your own work
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for a week, starting now.
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.

An off the wall* entry, this is an Instax of a mural painted inside the restaurant (of the same name, of course). It was recommended to me by a MR photo member and it was delicious!

*errrr, on the wall??

Skylight looking at the tower of the RenCen in Detroit. Here's a fun historical tidbit: Back in the 80s, the RenCen was quite strict about people taking photographs inside, often going to the extent of escorting them out. However, since GM assumed control, they've become a bit more relaxed about it.

So , time for some results . Just as a disclaimer , I am in no part an expert in judging quality , or artistic merit of anything , let alone photos . I'm just some old guy ...

@madmin - Don't think I've ever seen shutters like that , with the hinge in the middle . Are they storm shutters like the hurricane shutters in Florida? Interesting graphics on the wall . Does the writing have to do with the 150th anniversary of the Paris Commune?

@mollyc - Taken with an Instax !? And then scanned or retaken with a 'real camera' ? If this is in the entryway , hope they didn't make you wait for a table ...

@ovbacon - That's certainly different !! Giant statuary on the side of a building! Initially I thought there was just one , but it appears that there at least 2 more hiding behind the trees .

@Strider64 - Lots going on in the foreground here . Are the vertical bars in the foreground part of a tensioning device , or are they part of a 'tensegrity' structure of some sort ?

@_timo_redux_ - A fine example of what happened in the later part of the 1800's when power operated woodworking machinery became common in millwork shops . Builders went wild with trim as it was now (relatively) cheap . Neat story behind the building , too

@oblomow - Looks like an auditorium of some sort . Is that helmet like overhang shielding a couple of balconies?

@Janichsan - Those are interesting patterns on the sheathing panels . I see a lot of similar panels used in new construction around me , though the ones in the picture are a lot nicer looking .

@arkitect - I looked up the building ... Wow , just a bit over the top ! Is the subject of the photo a dragon , a sea serpent , the result of nightmares after too much greasy food , or something continuing the Dantesque theme of the rest of the building .

Guess I gotta pick placeholders so

3rd @ovbacon

2nd @arkitect

1st @_timo_redux_

Had a real tough time choosing between 1st and 2nd .

But it's all yours for next week @_timo_redux_

Glad you liked it!
The Palacio Barolo is fan*tast*ique!
A wonderful fantasy of a building. Apparently all inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy. (Or as you say, too much rich food! 🤣)

You can go up to the lantern — like a lighthouse…

Thanks for the great contest theme (said the architect) ... I know I look at and think about architectural details a lot, for work and pleasure. Was in fact just this weekend looking at stupendous detail on a series of turn-of-the-last-century Midwestern banks; real wowie-zowie stuff.

I enjoyed looking at all the entries, and thanks to @someoldguy for the judging and comments.

New contest up: leaf

Probably not storm shutters. I think the writing is about the Commune but it's been there a few years so unsure about any anniversary significance. Thanks for the nice contest and write up.

Yes, taken with an Instax and then scanned for online sharing. It's just a cute mural in their vestibule area. I know it wasn't really "architectural" per se, but it did fit the brief of "decorative trim....that fits no purpose." 🙂

It was a really good breakfast! (Actually we were there at lunch time but we all had breakfast food.)

Congratulations to the podium holders!
