What causes stuck pixels?

I woke up my macbook this morning only to find the screen had developed at least 3 more stuck pixels that definitely weren't there last night. I remember that 2 appeared after only a couple of days use. I now have red, green, blue and white pixels on a black background. The lid was closed but I never put things on the closed lid, so I know I didn't damage the screen. So what causes stuck pixels, and what makes them suddenly appear?
