What does my MacBook Pro do when I close the lid?

For a long time I have been wondering what exactly does my rMBP do when I close the lid, unlike Windows based laptops, it doesn't give you the option to choose what it would do, I noticed that when I close the lid and re open it in a short time it comes on faster than if I re open it after a night.. Why is that?
And how can I be sure that my Mac is actually going to sleep?

It goes to sleep.

If you reopen it faster than the time it takes to go to sleep, it'll wake up faster.

You'll see the white light in front pulsating when it's sleeping.

The MBPs with the light begin to pulsate very soon after closing the lid, and those shipped with HDDs.

The retina MBPs probably go to sleep nearly instantaneously, considering they're equipped with much faster SSDs.

command your dog to lay down. that is how your lap top feels when its lid is unexpectedly closed.

About the only way that you can tell if it is sleeping is to feel the bottom after awhile. It will be cool. I have come home after working to find that my MBP never went to sleep and stayed on all day with the lid closed. Never figured out why but it does happen occasionally. I have the mid 2015 15" MBP 16GB, 512GB.

I miss the light in front too.

Monitor the battery. If it's significantly decreased then you know it's not sleeping.

You can also check the system monitor and it will tell you if any apps are preventing sleep.

Not the answers you're looking for but it'll help you build up trust maybe.

For me, a MacBookPro5,2 with 8 GB memory and solid state hybrid drive sometimes takes an extraordinarily long time, maybe a few minutes, for that business to complete.

A mac connected to a monitor, AC Power, keyboard and mouse, will not go into sleep mode when the lid is closed. You should also, as mentioned earlier, be able to hear the fan stop when the machine goes to sleep.

If the Mac sleeps: a negligible amount.

If you want to take things a step further, consider SmartSleep. It makes it easy to force hibernation.

In any case, you should probably sometimes allow the battery to run so low that hibernation occurs without SmartSleep.

This is because of "Stand By" mode on newer Macs. When you first close the lid, it really is not sleeping, but rather more like suspended... so it wakes very quickly. But after three hours, it will enter stand by mode and the session state will be saved out to the SSD. Once in stand by mode, it can last up to thirty days on battery power.

When waking from stand by mode it is a little slower waking than just regular sleep mode because the session state must be loaded back in from the SSD.
