General What does "Reduce White Point" do exactly in technical terms?

I would like to know what the iOS 7.1 option "Reduce White Point" really does. How and if it makes use of pixels, backlight, refresh rates, pulse width modulation etc. to make the screen appear less bright. Please share your knowledge. The more detailed and in-depth, the better.

Not sure how technical it is, but it warms the color temperature of the entire screen.

It darkens white, which affects every color, but not black.
