What happens when the Developer Preview expires?

Assuming it does expire, what would happen?

I only ask because I have a month left of my developer membership and I won't be renewing as I'm no longer making apps - if I continue to download iOS 9 and El Capitan and then my membership runs dry, will this affect my use? Will I be able to update to the latest developer builds?
