iPhone SE (2016) What is the iPhone SE equivalent to?

2020 iPhone SE is based on the iPhone 8. The 2016 SE was based on the iPhone 5s. I hope this answered your question OP.
Apple has gotten really bad with the nomenclature with their products and services over the past few years.
I wished Apple would have called the SE from 2020 as SE2.
They are starting to confuse people with their products names. So many people mix up Apple TV, Apple TV+, and Apple's TV app, also.

My understanding was that the internals of the first iPhone SE were based off the iPhone 6s. You're right in that it takes design cues from the 5s though.
