What precautions should I take before updating

I notice some users are having problems after updating. What precautions should I take if i update. i noticed talk about verifying & permissions. could someone advise a good routine please?

make sure you back up all your data BEFORE you run the update

I suppose if you want to play it really safe you should unplug everything (hardware like external drives and iPods in particular), close down all your apps, use Disk Utility to repair permissions, then run the update. Afterwards, repair permissions again and plug everything back in.

Having said that, most of the time this isn't necessary.
