Could you record a video of the device booting up? The messages Linux prints as it boots up may produce some additional clues as to what's in there.

Thanks. There's not as much information as I hoped for, but it seems to have a WiFi or ethernet module called "Ocean PadCARD". There's also several error messages about the hard drive not responding to a command (the lines starting with hda).

cleaning out dread end things in life. i guess these two identical web pads will join the electronics graveyard. RIP! i will keep the double walled boxes though......
